One thing to remember is: the guy with the ball can always be one step ahead of the defender. The defender has to react to what you do, if you "sell" going one way, he has to follow you or else get left behind. So a simple head fake, jab step, or fake pass can send him in the wrong direction, and give you enough space to make a move to the basket. Probably the best way to fake someone out off the dribble is the crossover, which can be hard to pull off without carrying the ball or travelling, but done right can be "killer." The more you practice dribbling, the more you can envision moves and fakes, you just have to go out and do it.

The jab step is pretty effective, cross over is good when your dribbling, pump fake is great when you can't move anymore or if you are in the triple threat position. The more advance player will use a combination of these moves, like a spin and then pump fake that should open a lane for a dunk or layup or open shot, this move is called up and down.

basic fake when you have the ball in a stationary position is to fake left/right dip the ball as if your going to drible then go the other direction with a cross over. thid goes well with perimeter players who are not really that fast on the dribble and a decent ball handling skills.

Well, for me, it would be to do tricks like the "cross-over". Or when you barley received the pass, pumpfake then run to the hoop.
