It depends how small you mean by smaller lizards. I would say the best small lizards are leopard geckos and crested geckos. You can find great caresheets (and pics) for both here:
http://www.thegeckospot.com/careindex.html
The next size up from this would maybe be a schneider skink:

On from that you could maybe look at bearded dragons or blue tongue skinks. I would consider these to be slightly bigger but I guess it depends what they're being compared with lol. If its an iguana, say, then these would be smaller. Caresheets can be found at:

These are all great beginner lizards and can become very tame and friendly if you spend the time with them.
I hope that helps. Good luck!

I have a bearded dragon - they get up to about 19-23 inches as adults. They have great personalities and are cleaner then say an iguana. You can usually get one for about $60 but with everything it will probably be more of a $175 to start. But other expenses like crickets, calcium dust and such could add up. My only suggestion is before you buy something go to your local pet store and pick up a book on the kind you are looking at it. It will give you a lot of information. A good beardie book is The Bearded Dragon Manual. Good Luck!

I love iguana's they are great lizards and so smart, but if you want something a little small you could try an Asian Water Dragon which look a lot like an iguana, Gecko's are great too.

I have a pink bellied swift, a jeweled sided curly tail, and a guyana lizard. My favorite is the curly tail it is very colorful. Another good small lizard would be an anole.

Horny toads!! They are small and cute in a weird way, have you ever seen one. Strange but NEAT little animals, I live in Texas and we use to play with them when I was younger. Of course we could just go out in the pasture or down the dirt roads and pick them up. We had to be careful with them or they would spit this black yucky, stinky stuff at us. I haven't seen one in years but if I could get one that's what I would get!
