An artist's sallary varies. If they work for someone, say doing illustrations or even face painting, they have at least a steady income. If they are a studio artist they depend on gallery sales and that is hit or miss. Most artists put more money in per year on their artwork then they will make. Why do it? Because it is their passion, they believe in their work, and they believe that eventually one day their work will sell, and sometimes it does. Then they can make a decent amount of money. But many artists die very poor (yet fullfilled)

So sallary? An artist's sallary is whatever sallary their other job makes.

Artists salaries vary: Graphic Arts & Designers usually start $32K plus (pending on city & location), fine artists I know make between $8k to $80k annually - it depends if they are gallery artists, portrait artists, etc. Overall, the arts are low paying.
The Caves of Lascaux (France) are considered to be some of the earliest known forms of line drawings/art. 4 years or college is usually considered "formal training" - although no college is required to be an artist. As for common used art from a long time ago, look into cuneiform writing (stamping objects). Good luck!

First man-made art is debatable but if you're just sticking to drawings, then go for upper Palaeolithic period cave paintings from France or Spain. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prehistoric_art

Also if you follow the links within the above link, you can find more information about the techniques for creating the cave paintings as well as tool-usage for pre-historic figurines.
