Because that is what it is, the party of the democrats, the use of the word democratic would be incorrect in this usage as it is in politics already being used as a description for a type of government. It would only confuse things and mislead people into thinking that democrats are suited to lead better in a democratic form of government. Of course this is the reason democrats want to be know as the democratic party instead of the democrats, to mislead the people with the use of this word in the same way they do with the use of the word liberal to make people think of liberty, freedom in connection with the party. In the meantime they forget that ours is a democratic REPUBLIC, and to be a true democracy alone would be nothing more than glorified mob rule. As for what the dems should call the republican party, I suggest the republican party or conservative party, as that is what they are or aspire to be.

What is wrong with the word democrat?? It is the Democrat Party and that is the official name.
And the democrats should call the opposing party, the Republican Party.

It is democrat and Republican. If you want to be called Democratic's that is fine with me . But it doesn't make your ideas any more rational. YOU WANT TO BE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY ONLY BECAUSE YOU THINK IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE YOU ARE THE PARTY THAT STANDS FOR DEMOCRACY.WE ALL KNOW THAT IS A LIE. Watch what your leaders do to the United States . And what they do to your wallet. The econemy will go in the tank and your taxes will rise.

Same reason we don't say "the Democratics passed a stupid bill today" .It's grammatically correct to say "Democrat party".
