I want to know too. I think it makes them look like self serving individuals who use the bible to control the masses more than they do about the actual message of christ.

Because they are more concerned with maintaining power and control over other people. They are not concerned with the teachings of God and Jesus Christ that do not allow them to maintain control over other people.
