Being social is something only humans do. We are the only species that are not born with everything that is required to live a successful life. Think of a baby cow. They are born and in a very short time get up and walk and are pretty independent from that moment on. Human means rely heavily on their elders to learn things needed to succed through life. That process is called socialization. That is where you learn to be social. To be social means something different in all cultures. In the predominate US culture, to be social does usually mean to be outgoing and talkative, but in other cultures, that is not the social norm (or normal activity). Being social is acting the way that is expected in a certain context. At a party, have fun, talk, laugh, etc. At a dinner party, mingle with guests, dance at approriate times, etc. As they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
