Do you have a magnitude for the vector v? Without that magnitude, the answer can have quite a range of values. If v=0, u+v=u but if v->infinity, u+v=v.

u = 5 = 5<-1,0> = <-5,0>
v = 5 = 5<1/√2,1/√2> = <5/√2,5/√2>

u + v = <-5,0> + <5/√2,5/√2> = <-5+5/√2,5/√2>
