This came up awhile back at lunch and it has been troubling me ever since! Does anyone have any insights or maybe could point me in the direction of a philosopher who knows about this? Thanks so much!

Its a two way thing. Society owes benefits(not talking social security benefits) to individuals and individuals owes service to the society in return.

Individuals to Society because people who give are happier, more content, and make a difference in the world. If Society is not an individual person, how can it give? If all gave, can you imagine?
