This is the stupidest thing that anyone has said to me. I just don't understand it. If I have cake that is MINE, why the hell can't I eat it. That is not being greedy at all. I have to give my cake away?
I know that when people say this that they don't mean literally, but it is supposed to match. The frase " they should bury the hatchet" makes sense because it means two people should stop attacking eachother all the time.
But to tell me that I can't eat MY cake!!!!!
Please someone explain this to me or agree with me that it IS THE dumbest saying of all time.

Ha, no it is kind of a dumb saying. What it means is that you can not have your cake and ENJOY it too. Meaning, sometimes, when you finally get what you want, it's too late or too complicated, (or whatever) to fully enjoy.

Why cake is used as a metaphor, I have no idea. It may have deeper roots than I know of.

::EDIT:: I also agree with that guy above me.

underachievers have a way of either forgetting something and have to have help or they do dumb things and have to have help, yadda yadda, there are endless ways to which the behavioral SCIENCES HAVE WORKED OUT THE EDUCATION OF PEOPLE THE LOCK~STEP~METHODOLOGIST, use the learned patterns that were brought back from Germany & japan from ww I I,as the model of manipulating the type A or hyperactive person in how they respond, ALL THE REST THEY KILLED,they (big brother) want feed back and the way of diSinformation to reveal what your needs are is one of the ploys to let u c that if u get the cake and eat it theory~when u reveal that u want the cake it sends back the information that is revealing of you~this is critically abused in the ways that i will not reveal here as you've had a sample of something that is more like shootimg your self in the foot when u understand how it is "u" not the cake that is relevant

The analogy goes like this--you can't have money, and spend it too! It causes a deficiet and and that is what is meant by eating the cake.

It means if you eat your cake then you no longer have it. It means you can't have things both ways.

By "have", it doesn't mean own, exactly, it means that if you eat the cake, you no longer "have" it, because it doesn't exist.

Get it?

In simple terms...it means you can not have everything ...

for instance...if you asked for something and got most of it...but, not all of it...this saying would apply to this particular situation.
