Hi there!
I am from The Netherlands and was wondering if you could enlighten me about an experience that I've had.
Aprox. 2 years ago when I was doing busines with an investor from within an internet café for young people on a "silent" moment a girl standing behind me together with 2 other girls who were doing nothing a for a moment suddenly called out that she smelled "sigars" while ofcourse noone was smoking a sigar and nobody ever smoked sigar in there. The people in the room acknoledged her but did not have an explaination for her and didn't say anything about it.
When I was doing business with this investor, I smelled the smell of sigars myself often. I smelled the smell of money, however that may smell when doing business with some other investors over the internet.
The girls were standing like 3-4 meter behind me. The other people were bussy on the computers.
Looking forward to any explaination for this.
Best Regards,
Science Japan

Hi there!
Thank you for your responses. I notice a lot of skeptism, wich is ofcourse logically. I would have it to when I would hear anyone telling such a story. I just want to guarantee you, that this is for real. The girls didn't fart, it smelled actually like a good sigar and it was verry intensive, maybe because it were big investors with whom I was talking (millionairs, top business people).
The girl confirmed the smell, as for me it might just have been an interpretation of the way the investor talked to me etc. The girl however, did not know me nor the investor or the fact that I was talking to an big investor.
You might not believe me, and proving this might be very dificult but I just want to make sure to you that this is in fact true. The people arround me seemed to understand and confirm the girl aldough they didn't have an answere for it.

I do like the answer by xaviar_onasis referencing how smell and the brain could be related, causing a kind of nose hallucination. However that does not really solve why the same cigar smell was noticed by multiple people.
We lived in a house when I was a teen where every now and then, in the same part of the house, we would smell a strong odor of lavender. This was an old house that was fully renovated before we moved in and my mum was intolerant of all perfumed products. We did not have anything in the house that had a scent, and particularly not lavender. It would just come and then go. I always felt there was a ghost.

I'm not in the whole paranormal type of thing, but I can tell about some things. If you smell tobacco or perfume at only your house, then maybe the people who lived there before you smoked. A good scrubbing should get that smell out. For the unexplained cuts, i also get them, I heard when sleeping you tend to move, and get cut even on dull things. For the things moving, you could have hit them, or accidentally grabbed them in your sleep. That is what I can think of, hope it helps you.

I used to work in an office that was an old house that had been renovated.
One of the guys I worked with claimed it was haunted, and every once in a while you would smell pipe or cigar smoke.
I actually did smell what could have been some kind of tobacco smoke one time, but I think it was coming from something else, and not from a ghost.

One possible explanation is that one of the business people had smoked a cigar recently and the odor came from their clothes. Or someone had been in a room which there was cigar smoke and the odor came from their clothes. This would be the mundane explanation and the one that would be accepted by most skeptics. But this isn't to say that some other non-ordinary explanation doesn't exist.

Sounds to me like the cigar smell is a spirit surrounding that investor that you were dealing with. Could have been one of his old buisness partners, or someone HE lost. But doesnt sound to me like it has anything to do with you personally. You just happened to be in the right place at the right time is all.
Maybe you should have asked him if he smelled it.

I do not know that I can explain your specific example, but I would like to point out something often overlooked by the lay public.
We tend to think of our senses as being one way flows and honest.
That is, we tend to expect what we see, hear and smell to be authentic measurements of 'outside' of us. This is largely so.
But it also works the other way round. Sometimes, what we see, feel, smell and so on arises in our minds first and is still experienced as coming from our senses in response to 'outside us'.
Perhaps the most common place you notice this is in dreams. When you may see, hear or feel something that is a complete creation of your mind. But it crops up in other, more subtle ways. For instance, experiments have shown that my itching my nose makes it more likely that you will 'feel' an itch in your nose.
Suggestion from other people is more likely to happen with hearing or smell, as these senses are less specific in most people than sight or touch is. But certainly all senses can be fooled, as when very cold water is felt to be hot when a person is led to believe it is hot.
So, other than some more grounded reasoning (cigars might be smelled as residue on someone's clothing), you also have to contend with experiences that arise in your own mind but seem just as authentic as those that arise externally.

Gas, flatulance? Some cigars smell that bad. One of the girls probably let loose with some gas and was too embarassed to admit to it.
