The GCF of two (or more) nonzero whole numbers ia the largest whole number that is a factor of both (all) numbers. For example if you are comparing 6 and 9 then 3 is the GCF.
To find the GCF of 81 and 72 break them down to prime factors and go from there.
EX:
81= 3*3*3*3
72=2*2*2*3*3
GCF = 3*3=9
rule of thumb: always take the Largest number of common factors.

The greatest common factor of two numbers is the largest number that both are divisible by. For example, the largest common factor of 32 and 24 is 8. While 32 and 24 are also divisible by 4, it is not the largest number that both are divisible by.
