The Rosetta Stone is a Ptolemaic era stele inscribed with the same passage of writing in two Egyptian language scripts (hieroglyphic and demotic) and in classical Greek. It was created in 196 BC, discovered by the French in 1799 at Rosetta, and translated in 1822 by Frenchman Jean-François Champollion. Comparative translation of the stone assisted in understanding many previously undecipherable examples of hieroglyphic writing. The text of the Rosetta Stone is a decree from Ptolemy V, describing the repealing of various taxes and instructions to erect statues in temples.
The Stone is 114.4 centimeters high at its tallest point, 72.3 centimeters wide, and 27.9 centimeters thick (45.04 in. high, 28.5 in. wide, 10.9 in. thick). Weighing approximately 760 kg (1,676 pounds), it was originally thought to be granite or basalt but is currently described as granodiorite and is dark grey-pinkish in color. The Stone has been kept at the British Museum in London since 1802.

Found in Rosetta Egypt in the early 1800s, it was a stone, about 45 inches by 28 inches, that contained a message in three languages. One was in ancient hieroglyphics, the second in a later (unknown) Egyptian alphabet. The third in an early version of Greek. At that time no one know how to read the first two languages.
When the Greek was write, it said at the end "This message is repeated in sacred and common". "Sacred" with the ancient hieroglyphics and "normal" the old Egyptian. Suddenly scholars had something they could read in these two unknown languages.
Using the few words they learned from the stone, they were able to decode most of the rest of these two ancient languages and were suddenly able to read thousands of documents and inscriptions that until then had been a total mystery.
Once they had those languages, they were able to find similar multi-language inscriptions that let them decode several other ancient languages.

Ptolemaic era flat stone inscribed with the same passage of writing in two Egyptian language scripts (hieroglyphic and demotic) and in classical Greek. It was created in 196 BC, discovered by the French in 1799 at Rosetta, and translated in 1822.
Since it had the same words in different languages, it allowed people to know what hieroglyphics meant. The term is now used to describe something that helps people understand things they did not know.

It was the key to uncoding the ancient egyptian heiroglyphic language. There was one message on it in three languages: Greek, Heiroglyphs and Coptic (im not sure about the last one) anyways because Greek was still a living language, they could uncode the heiroglyphs. It was discovered in the town of Rosetta Egypt by a memeber of Napoleans army.
