That is it was gouged with a sharp splinter, healed but now this person says (10 yrs later) that they have to be careful about opening their eye too fast in the morning or after sleeping, because it will re-tear the tissue.

It's called a recurrent corneal errosion and can occur after an injury to the eye. Upon awakening, the "injury" or epithelial tissue can re-torn. On some people, this never completely goes away.

Well it takes 4-5 weeks for an eye injury to heal !
yes yourself better get an Osmologist to check them ok ?

approximately 10 to 12 days but you have to monitor the situation even after the stipulated days.look out for scarring,pus and blood and antibiotic prescribed by the dotor would help speed up recovery period
