I have already worked with children for MANY years and I am in the process of getting my degree in elem. education!

Any work or volunteer experience in a classroom, extra curricular activities that you have taken part in such as basketball coach or literacy instructor, etc. Most schools want someone who has a lot of experience in the field and is willing to be a part of the school in doing clubs and activities after school, etc. Good luck!

I would say previous job experience with kids, like maybe working at a daycare or a pre-school. A lot of these places don't require you to have any degree...

...also, community service that involves kids will look great--tutoring young kids is one example, running Toys for Tots is another.
