If it is in complete darkness, then yes, it will turn silver. All types of fish need light to retain the pigment in their scales. If they are in less-than-adequate lighting, then they still should maintain their golden orange color.

I'm thinking it might... but my goldfish barely gets any light (in my bathroom) and is still orange. Not a good project idea, but yes, goldfish do have better color in sunlight.

Genetics dictates the color of goldfish. Good food will enhance color. They need light to make Vitimin D just like we do. They will become calcium depleated in the dark. Its not a nice thing to do to them. They need light and dark. I leave my lights on 12 and off 12 hours.

no, goldfish will not go to that colour. it may darken however quite slightly. this is called the pond effect. as fish in ponds develop a richer and darker colour.
