2.2 engines are very bad for head gaskets, probably whats going on. Look below your thermostat housing, can usually see them leak externally as well

Take the radiator cap off while it(the engine ) is cold Start the engine and put the heater / defroster on high. Watch the antifreeze level in the radiator when the thermostat opens your antifreeze level will drop significantly. Top off the radiator, reinstall the cap with the arrows pointing at the overflow hose cause that way you know the cap is tight and then fill the overflow tank to the hot mark. The reason you weren't getting heat is the radiator level dropped below the heater hoses when the thermostat opened. Now if your antifreeze disapears again and their is no signs of leakage you could have a blown headgasket

Jason may be on to something,Individual had a leak after turn key off, there was a leak at radiator. He had been adding water and drove S10 pickup several times/this isn"t what you describe,But after I replace Radiator eng would heat up,I felt upper radiator hose no heat, replaced thermastat ,same problem,
Eng temp going toward hot zone, top Radiator hose no heat.Removed thermostat.Cranked eng.temp gauge middle and climbing ,and yes Radiator fan working.I removed upper Radiator hose from Radiator, cranked Engine,Bingo ( I ran eng until water was flowing from Upper Hose,Put thermostat back in worked fine. When you select heat the water is routed thru the heater core inside your car, when you turn off heat no water comes in to hter core, The temp gauge if any thing should be cooler when
heat is selected. If you are not getting warm air water isn"t flowing thru heater core, also no coolant. Coolant is going some whereFirst question--Is upper radiator hose warm2nd question--3rd question why no coolant comming thru heater core.I almost forgot is radiator fan coming on when mid temp is reached?

It sounds like you might have a seeping head gasket. With the engine running and the radiator cap off, look for bubbles in your coolant. If you see bubbles, you have a seeping head gasket.
Put the thermostat back in or you will continue to be cold, but with a seeping head gasket, you won't have any heat either.
