Yes, don't do it, the Secret Service doesn't like people doing it.

According to the Secret Service, you may copy U.S. Currency as long as the copy is more than one and one half times the original size or less than two thirds the original size. Otherwise you are counterfiting. They take a dim view of same size reproductions, whether they are in black and white or color. If the image of the currency is to be printed for some advertising promotion, all plates and / or film must be destroyed when the printing is finished.

I had to contact the Secret Service once when a client wanted to use a Hundred Dollar bill in an advertising piece.

"It is illegal to make any color copies of any kind of small-size U.S. notes. They may only be copied in black and white and must be larger than 150 percent of the note size, or less than 75 percent of the note size. Large size notes may be copied in color, but the official regulations setting out the specifics have not been issued. To be on the safe side, use the 150-75 formula set up for black and white photos.

Writing "COPY" or something similar, or copying only a portion of a note does not exempt you from the copying law. The act of copying is the crime."

Yes. We tried to do it on the copier at work and it actually would not copy it. Came out with a message saying something about illegal.

yes it might be. it would be hard to prove you weren't trying to spend it. as long as it doesn't look too real you're fine. however, i remember watching the news about a women who was arrested for trying to spend a 1,000,000 dollar bill. the US, although i love it, is an amoral nation that only cares about money. try to fool them, and they come at you with guns.
