I often wonder why prostitiution remains ilegal. It has been impossible to police effectively since history records.

Surely legalisation is sensible? Where laws could be enforced to limit the spread of STD's and regulated testing associated with them.

Why allow the profits to fall into the hands of the seedy underworld of pimps and drug dealers? Why spend money trying to control it when it could be a source of tax revenue?

I understand some people will consider it immoral but then they son't have to take part in it. Some people consider eating of animals immoral so why is that not banned?

I see legalisation bringing protection to prostitutes and making at profession of choice rather than necessity and desperation. I have talked with prostitutes in Amsterdam who have benefited greatly supporting themselves through University and to be honest enjoying their work.

I tend to agree with you. However in my opinion, the oldest profession in the world is not prostitution. It's politics.

In Nevada licensed brothels can legally conduct prostitution. Outside of those brothels it is illegal. It is highly monitored and taxed. The brothels are ran like a place of business. The workers be it male or female are routinely(weekly) screened for stds. The local and state government collect a great deal of revenue from them. Prostitution will always be around and until a harder look is taken at these practices there will continue to be the horror everyone hears about prostitutes. I am sure that more people feel the way you and I do but are just to scared to be the ones to say " I support prostitution and want to make it a legal profession and offering in my state. The below website makes for some good reading.

I don't agree with you. Laws are made to reflect the moral values of the people. A majority have said that they wish to ban prostitution and that is why it is banned. A majority have not said that they wish to ban carnivorous diets, so it is not banned. The government usually reflects the will of the majority (usually, I said).

Sensibility? Effective enforcement? Are either one of those qualities required?

Just hold a little while longer, though, and maybe the U.S. Supreme Court will end up ruling that prostitution is a constitutionally protected right.

I knew a girl who was putting herself through an Ivy League University doing it. I guess people think it is immoral I also think that many women would be against it for selfish reasons. A cop put this idea into my head, he said that from a purely economic standpoint, why bother dating if you could just go and spend the money equivalent to about 3 dates, to not play games and have fun with a women you consider to be very attractive. I think that would have a definite change on society.

Prostitution is legal in the State of Nevada, other than Clark County (Las Vegas). There are brothels in otherwise unknown towns like Pahrump that bring in commerce. The State regulates the brothels, the women are subject to health inspection and testing, latex condoms are required and they even take Visa and Mastercard. Priceless.
And if you don't want to go, you don't have to.

I agree with you, that is a porfession that is that persons choice, it should be regulated and they should be tested and this should be enforced. Either way its going to be done, and maybe this way, there won't be the need for pimps, and people bringing illegals from other countries and make them go into the sex trade against their will, there are alot of pros and cons here.
