American Standard is the parent company of Trane. American Standard and Trane merged in '74. Trane, with over 100 years in the refrigeration industry and GE with the same (now Amerian Standard), make a heck of a combination with their experience. Go to www.trane.com and research their product testing lab and procedures and you will be convinced they are the best.

I am a HVAC contractor with 30 years in the trade. I presently sell & install WeatherKing (mfg. by Rheem) forced air furnaces & air conditioners. I like the direct (no pilot) spark ignition (less failure rate than HSI), the fact that the entire upper cabinet is the sealed combustion chamber (2 pipe or direct vent installation on 90+ AFUE models) - easier to service in comparison to other makes where the burners, igniter & flame sensor are all stuffed in a little sheet metal box - everything stays cleaner and venter motor run's cooler due to this design. The latest models have new technology in condensate sensors verses other makes still using pressure switches (nuisance lock-out service calls), a self priming (& removable for cleaning) condensate trap and 1/4 turn handles on both cabinet door's which makes a nice tight seal to the well-built cabinet - keeping components clean, quiet with no-rattle doors & no-tools required to remove. These new models are 360 degree's - meaning 1 furnace with the right optional kit converts an up-flow to a down-flow, horizontal-left or right. All this & still designed with in-shot burners rated at less than 15K BTUH each making it 1 of the quietest furnaces on the market. Well Done Rheem! Don't get all caught up in the "well-known" name brands folk's, remember, they are all boxes with out-sourced (Honeywell, White-Rodgers, Robert-Shaw, etc.) internal components - it's HOW it is all put together and most importantly HOW it's installed that makes the difference.

Being in the industry, I would recommend trane or carrier due to their research into their products and carry a good warranty. But most are the same just painted different colors and different suppliers of motors etc.

My father-in-law, that has 17 years of experience in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) installation, said that "American Standard" is one of the best. Their units fail least, even less than "Carrier" (3 of every 100 units fail).

Trane or Lennox are the ones I would recommend. Make sure you look into air filtration also.

trane or carrier. trane predominantly cost more due to their advertising. american standard is basically a low grade trane. its a pretty decent alternative to paying for tranes advertising.
