I don't know what part of town vetsmom's is living in, but if it's snowing once a year there she is getting more than the rest of the city. Try it only snows about once every 10 years, maybe.
San Antonio is a very diverse city. Like any large city you can find parts where crime is high, but over all it is not. The north-side of San Antonio has a low crime rate. There are excellent public schools in the city and in the outlying areas. There is no state income tax in Texas, but there is property tax on homes. Bexar County and the surrounding area is not too bad. Harris County (Houston) is one of the worst in the country.
If I am suppose to talk you out of San Antonio then you may want to keep in mind the weather can be hot in the summer. When the Edwards Aquifer is low you cannot water your yard or wash your car. Since the city has grown the traffic has gotten worse. Ok, I am out of reasons.
San Antonio is really a very nice place to live.

Well, I don't want to move to San Antonio..... my husband does. So if I pursade you, then I should move there too!
1. weather: not to hot nor to cold. I think it may only snow 1 a year or less, rain is more abundant! most of the time it's foggy in the mornings but plesant. it probably rain alot during the summer, but no biggy, because houston and other beach cities are close by where it doesn't rian as much! flooding might be a problem when it rains lots, which might be 2-3 times a year, if you're in a low area.
2. Crime: not to sure, can't be that bad because there are lots of family neighborhoods and great schools!
3. health, way better than california, new york, or florida!
4. cost of living: i find that anywhere in texas is way below than anywhere else. you can buy a 5 bedroom home for under 300,000! It's a steal!
5. language: mostly english, but I would say 45% also speak spanish! love my hispanics. but there are areas where it's only enlgish
6. diversity: great! it's a big mixing pot!
7. schools, not to sure, but I don't think private catholic school wouldn't be much of a problem if you're coming from another state!
GOOD LUCK!

I can't really think of any reasons you should NOT move to San Antonio, unless you're living someplace you cannot stand to leave. San Antonio is a pretty good city. The summers are hot, but it's in Texas so you have to expect that. The cost of living in Texas is pretty affordable. San Antonio has tons of good hospitals. It has a couple of good museums, it has lots of history (not only the Alamo but these 400-year-old missions built by the Spanish and the Spanish governor's palace downtown, which is a cool and interesting place to take kids). It has pretty good shopping, it has a pro basketball team, it has the Riverwalk. It has lots of Catholic schools if you're looking for Catholic schools; I expect they vary in what the tuition cost is. It has some public school districts that are rich and well-equipped and others that are poor and under-equipped, so you will have to look into that yourself. It's basically a bilingual and bicultural city which I think is a huge, tremendous plus and really cool. It has lots of military because of Fort Sam Houston. It has a rodeo in the summer. It has the Riverwalk. It has a zoo. It has too much traffic and it's very spread out but you can choose, after all, where you live so as to minimize commuting. Some San Antonians complain about the fact that their city is not Austin (it's not enough like Santa Fe) but other San Antonians are very happy they don't live in Austin. If you get too hot in the summer you can drive out to the Hill Country, rent an inner tube and float down a river, which will be nice and scenic.

I have lived in San Antonio for five years. I moved here from the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I really love it, but since you asked I will tell you the few negatives that I see. (Remember NO place is perfect!) The heat in summer can be a bit much if you are not used to it. It actually isnt as hot as Dallas/Fort Worth, but it is hot. If you enjoy the change of color in fall, there isnt any here. I am liberal politically and the town is heavy on retired military people, so many of the people are very conservative. There is very little public transportation.
Just so this doesnt seem like a slam on a city I love I would like to say positive things. There are excellent hospitals here. The cost of living is fantastic. I love the cultural diversity here! Its great to see the hispanic influence celebrated instead of being looked at as second class like it is in other areas of Texas. Great restaurants! (Sarika Thai on the NW side rocks!) And its as centrally located in Texas as you can get, 2 hours to the coast, an hour to Austin, 4 1/2 hours to DFW, 3 hours to Houston, ect.

I can't think of to many reasons NOT to move to SA. I've been here for 10 years and I love it. Many people will argue the weather here is bad but it's really not that bad. Yes, it's more humid but still in very tolerable ranges.
I grew up as a military brat. I got to see many places in the US and abroad. When I was of age I joined the military myself. My first and last assignment was San Antonio. I can honestly tell you I've been to many places and I absolutely fell in love w/ this place.
Real estate is ridiculous. Cost of living is so cheap you can really get into a nice house for very little. The food and culture is diverse. There's constantly some kind of event going on downtown every weekend. There's always things to do here.
You'll find out for yourself SA is one of the fastest growing cities in the US. There is opportunity everywhere. I would be the last person to discourage anyone from moving here.

There aren't many downsides to living in San Antonio. If I can think of one sorta negative it is that Texas property taxes are the second highest in the nation (only to New York). We don't have state income tax so the property owner gets "hit". When your shopping for a home notice the property tax difference.
Frankly, we found an affordable home therefore making the taxes affordable.
Otherwise, living in San Antonio is great.

I agree with the answers stating that there are no negative reasons for moving to San Antonio. There aren't. Many of us who know the city would move there in a minute if our personal/ family situations warrant/permit such relocation.
Instead of feeling apprehensive, you should count yourself and your family members among the fortunate few who have the opportunity to live there. Viva la ciudad de San Antonio de Bexar!

Have you visited the city? That will likely do more to aid your decision than anything someone else can tell you on this board.
