I just added a 7dBi antenna to my d-link di-624 (g) and yes, it did improve it nicely. I had a laptop in a room on the other side of the house that used to get poor performance and now it's very nice.

The D-Link ANT-24-700 antenna came with a base and thin cable from the base to the router. Discard that because using it, I actually got WORSE performance.

I used to be able to use my laptop only next door, now I can go about three houses away. (The antenna is in the corner of a 2nd floor room.)

yes. however, if you're using the antenna that came with the thing spend 50 dollars on a new antenna and it should improve on range a little bit, but if you have dead spots in most of your home get a better modem, or just buy a router and a plain vanilla ethernet modem. make sure the new router has at least one WAN (NOT wlan, that's completely different) port.

Basically yes, but the detailed answer can depend on many factors. You could also upgrade your wireless router to one that has better range or more bandwidth (like 802.11g or 802.11n (currently only available in pre-release versions). I saw an 802.11g router at BestBuy a couple of weeks ago for about 50 bucks.
