Be honest, approach the situation directly, and do it privately. If you know anything about what the cause might be (bad or unbrushed teeth, diet, throat infection, etc), offer to help him find a remedy. He should respect that, even if he's self-concious about it.

This way, he will respect you for a) not bullshitting him, b) respecting his social privacy, and c) helping him out (assuming he does not already know).

Good luck!

Give him a breath mint. If he does not take it tell him he really should. If he does not get the hint he has other problems or ask if he needs another flavor.

It will not be easy! Make sure you two are alone and calming tell them that you care a lot about them. And wanted to tell them something to help them not to embarrass them. And tell them as nicely as you can. If they are a good friend, then they'll be glad you told them. Good luck.

my best friend has a way of being blunt and saying something to me even if it can hurt my feelings, and I love that because we're honest to each other!

don't be afraid to tell your friend, listen, I think you need a tic tac (if he gets upset he'll get over it if he's really a good friend)

if you're too scared to do that, talk to one of his brothers or sisters, or someone else he's close to
