I've been cruising through a lot of 360's lately and I am totally astounded at the number of fake pics. What gives? They're pretty obvious, too. Should someone who posts a pic like that be required to post a disclaimer? Something like "This isn't me, it's just a pic I ::

1) really like
2) wish I looked like
3) was me, but 20 years ago

You get the general idea.

I think my main point is this:
Looks are fleeting. Character matters.

What does this say about these persons character?

Could it be that they feel so bad about themselves that they have to construct a shell to hide the real them?

Are they all supermodels and I'm full of baseless suspicions?

Or, are they simply head cases?

I'm not trying to be mean here, I am truly curious.

Everyone had some very good points. I particularly like Zippy and CRA's answers because they made me think about it a little differently than I have in the past.
But Bill's answer was clear, concidise and to the point.

It says that people with little sense of self are seduced by the "be who you want to be" of online.

So everyone is cuter, thinner, younger, and better "equipped" in their online identity.

Hotties don't put up ugly pics, after all.

Well, actually some are really supermodels, haha! I know some friends that actually are models, and they are the ones that like photos the most... If you see a bunch of pics of the same person and looks like a supermodel, maybe they are all really from the owner of the space... if you see only one photo that looks like a supermodel there is high chances that it is fake like you are saying... I believe they do that because they obviously want to attract more people to see their space... Actually the majority think opposite to your "Looks are fleeting. Character matters".. Most people, or at least in the Internet are looking for good looks rather than good character...
I think they are free to do whatever they want, and the Internet is all about being free and keeping the real you anonymous... at least for most people...

I agree with your main points....

I'll tell you why I have 'fake pics' - it's not out of a desire to mislead or to misrepresent myself.... it's because I have no current photos of myself. Why don't I? Cause I don't like the way I look right now. (yes, I'm overweight. I admit it. are you happy now?) So, I use 'old' photos of myself that look like 'me' (not quite 20 years ago) how I remember myself - how I feel.
If I were 'required' to put a disclaimer on my 360 page, I would be happy to comply. WARNING: THE PHOTOS YOU SEE HERE ARE OUT OF DATE. OBJECTS (OR PERSONS) PICTURED HEREIN MAY APPEAR YOUNGER AND THINNER THAN THEY EXIST {CURRENTLY} IN REAL LIFE.

I know a lot of people who posts fake pic, pretending she was a flight stewardess (she used a Nascar female model), and guess what? She was busted and got her account suspended! Serves her right!

Perhaps wishful thinking on their part?

I love your idea about the disclaimer!
