They are called the lakers because they originally were founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since Minnesota is the land of ten thousand lakes they were named the Lakers.

They were founded by Sid Hartmann who works for the Star Tribune newspaper in Minnesota. When the squad moved to Los Angeles in 1961, the name stuck that why there's a baby blue Kobe Bryant jersey with the state of Minnesota in the front.

Most Minnesotans were Lakers fans until the Timberwolves were founded.

The Lakers are in contention with one other team for the dumbest name after they moved. Of course the Minneapolis, seeing is how Minnesota is known as the "land of a thousand lakes" just as the New Orleans Jazz makes so much more sense then the Utah Jazz.

The team was originally from Minneapolis. They were named after the many lakes there. Then they moved to Los Angeles in 1960 and kept the name Lakers.

The Lakers started out as the Minneapolis Lakers, so called because Minnesota is the "Land of 10,000 Lakes." Technically a "laker" is something (usually a fish) that inhabits a lake.
