Reasons to wear underwear under board shorts:
-Boardshorts are clothes and you should wear underwear under clothes
-Boardshorts usually aren't very fitted in the waist and thus you could give quite a bit of a view if bending down, etc.
-You could easily loose your boardshorts
-A little waistband above anything is sexy (i think).

The only thing is if you are planning on wearing boardshorts as actual swim wear, you may want to wear non-cotton underwear because it is really uncomfortable when wet and slow-drying

So you actually may want to wear a speedo (brief like but water-proof) under the board shorts instead of underwear so you won't be uncomfy.

You can but your board shorts better be hiked up high. Wearing underwear under your boardshorts is like wearing booties with a spring suit, like wearing a black suit but wearing white socks, like telling everyone in the lineup you're the biggest kook within a 20mile stretch. If you must, just don't go out in the water and surf. Stay on the beach where you can look like you're just wearing board shorts.

Yes - and if you have a larger than average dong you'll be glad you did (it's less noticeable to others - which I think strangers appreciate - than going commando under them).

Other reasons: if you're going to be the trunks most of the day it's a lot more comfortable to have something on underneath, especially if you're walking, because nylon doesn't feel that good after a while (and often causes "nut-rash")

Also, if you're going to be in the ocean anywhere near jellies or sea lice (read: anywhere subtropical or tropical), a barrier to keep stingly, clingy organisms off your bits is highly preferred to itchy or painful stings down there.

I typically wear a pair of lightweight nylon biking shorts under my trunks when surfing or if I'm going to have them on all day. At the pool I just live large and try to impress everyone. ha.

If you are considering wearing briefs, you may as well buy a Speedo! They both serve the same purpose, but the fabric differences will help you out! Briefs are made from cotton, which readily absorbs water, therefore not drying as easily and possible chaffing the wearer. Speedo's on the other hand, are designed to dry faster and reduce chaffing!

Let the wearer decide. It's an optional thing. If you are afraid something is going to fall out, if you feel insecure. Then go ahead and wear something underneath. either way it is no ones business but yours.

if you want to. its all about a comfort issue. some people wear a swimmer/runner jockstrap that has a 1 inch waistband instead of a 3 incher.

What could it hurt, other than seeing an "underwear line" when they get wet.
