Are shorter dresses allowed at a formal dance? I am trying to go for the whole 50's style and all the dresses I have found only go down to mid-calf. If thats what they wore in the 50's to their dances would it work for me?

I think it is acceptable. It can certainly be just as dressy as a floor length dress. I worked at a mens formal wear shop for along time and I saw many girls attend formals in mid-calf dresses. I say go for it... sounds really cute =)

Yes shorter dresses are appropriate now, however, only 1 out of 1,000 wear short.
