Ignore what I wrote at the botton here, I just learned something new! Ha-Ha! You CAN change the workgroup name in the Computer Name Tab of System Properties! Cool!! I still believe we should use the Network Connection Wizard as it does really make sure all the proper configurations are properly set and can avoid problems in the future, but go ahead and change it in System Properties anyway. Good day to you! lol I learn something new every day, which is a major reason I come here! Smiling here! ;-)
How odd you don't have any IT to assist with the issue. However, it is a simple matter to fix. No, you don't change the Workgroup Name in the System Properties dialog box, only the Computer Name is changed there. You use the Network Connection Wizard and it is not difficutl at all. Make sure you know the real workgroup name first. Without that information you won't be able to hook up to the networked workgroup. If you are not sure how to get that bit of information, on one of the other computers of the workgroup you wish to join, click Start, place your mouse over the My Computer label and then right click and select Properties. Click the Computer Name tab. Under the Computer Name you will see the name of the workgroup all the other computers are joined up with.
Now, you can't change the workgroup at System Properties, unlike what other respondant have told you here. You can change the Computer's name, but not the workgroup name. To do that properly you need to run the Network Setup Wizard, which is the proper way to do this, as it sets all of the proper settings as they should be set, and you will have a lot fewer issues down the line than if you tried a shortcut for this.
So, just go into Control Panel, select the Network Setup Wizard, or right click the connection icon in the System Tray, select Network Connections, then in the left pane select Setup a Network, which will start the Network Setup Wizard. Either option will start it up for you.
Now, just follow all of the instructions in the Wizard, it is very simple. Put in the Computer Name in the proper place. The major confusing point could be if you run into the situation where multiple Network Adapters are installed, like one for a Wired Connection and one for a Wireless connection. If one is disabled, it will come up with a warning that a connection is unplugged and that you should plug it in. Just put a check mark in the box which is before wording such as "ignore the unplugged Adapter", and click the Next Button to continue the Wizard. Also, make sure you don't just quickly skip past the window where you put in the workgroup name as many just glance at this window and assume it is requesting the Computer name again, which it is not, but you would be surprised how many people get tripped up here! lol So, once you have put in the workgroup name, simply finish out the Wizard, print out the configurations if you choose and click Finish, or just click Finish if you don't care if you print out any configuration data. Then you are done.
It really is very simple, so don't be alarmed by the Wizard. Wizards were created to make these sorts of things very simple, and without the Wizard you and I would be required to use the Command Line to do this sort of configuring, not something I am up on at all, Ha-ha!
Good luck, but you really won't need it, it IS that simple, and have a great evening.
