A stud is a male animal that is used to breed. Generally, these are males with some very desirable trait or traits. Examples: champion show dog, winning race horse.

When this term is used in the animal world, it is referring to an intact male that is used for breeding. The term "Standing at Stud", means that the animal is available for breeding services to anyone wishing to go into aggreement through a contract with the Stud Owner for a fee.
Most commonly you see this for horses, cows, and dogs. But that certainly does not limit to other aniamls to offer their stud services.

It depends on exactly what you are referring too. Those other answers are some what correct but if you are referring to animal terms, a "stud" is any male animal that is "attached"(not neutered) and used for breeding purposes.

Same thing as stallion (in horses). A male horse that has not been gelded yet and is used for breeding. This also applies to other animals except it's called "fixed" or "neutered" instead of gelded and are not also called stallions. I hope this helps.
