The ancient Mayans didn't predict that the world would end in 2012. It's when their calender ends. The reason why people pay attention to this is that these people, who suddenly disappeared 1200 years ago, had an incredibly good calender, and math skills.
There is no record of why or how they disappeared, so we don't know if they "predicted" that or not. Predict literally means, to foretell. And it's not true that there are any Mayan writings that describe what will happen when the calender ends.
Ancient Mayan writings are hieroglyphic, and what they mean is subject to interpretation.
Since the calender ends at this date, some people have called it the end of "time," not the world. The biblical word for the end of time is "eschaton." The study of the end of time is called "eschatology."
Personally, I think that the Mayans were on to something. I think this date will approximately mark the end of "historical time." It will be the beginning of something much better, not an apocalypse.
History has been a long story of things like you mention in your question, wars, poverty...it is these things which will end, because technology will suddenly accelerate so fast that it will provide solutions that will look like magic.
Your future has every likelihood of playing out in a wonderful world, beyond anything we can imagine today.
The reason the Mayan date is so peculiar, besides the fact that they did have this strangely advanced math skill, is that it is so perfectly lining up with approximate date at which the exponential acceleration of knowledge and technological skill is about to go from horizontal to vertical, in a graph sense. This will be a transformative moment.
What the "time" of history means, vs what will happen next, is the subject for another question. But time is something you can think about. Does it have to be divided into hours, days, months? If you get more done, is there more time?

People have been predicting the end of the world for a very long time. It was supposed to end 10 or 15 times in the last 50 years depending on who you listened to.
On that date there is some sort of conjunction of the sun, earth and milky way. It ancient peoples all over the world these kinds of events were very important. The amazing part was that the Mayans were able to figure it out so far into the future, given that they didn't have all the advanced instruments we have today.

Lot's of predictions about end of the world have had dates that already have past (and obviously the world has not ended yet).
So, whether they Mayans are right or wrong, who can say. In the mean time I suggest you live your life like the world is not going to end, and if it does, well so what, it is out of your control anyway, so what's the diff., just as long as you have lived a good life. If it does not, well then you are prepared to continue life. Regarding Texas and Lou sliding into Gulf, well, some people would plan to move to higher ground now, some may not until their feet get wet.

No, no one can predict when and/or if the world will end. Don't be influenced by other people's negative attitude. There has always been war in the world and no land mass is sinking, just being submerged by melting icebergs that turn into water. I think you are worrying a little too much and being tad bit fatalistic. No one really knows what will happen in future.

Stop all of your worrying... The Mayans did not predict the end of the world... it just happened to be the last date they recorded in their calender ! It doesn't have to be the end of everything, just the end of their marking and management of time ! Don't believe everything your friend tells you... if the Mayans were so good at predicting the world's demise, how come they never forcasted their own downfall ???

I'm not so sure that is true. Although Mayans did predict it, and everything they have predicted has come true, it don't think so. If the world would end, it would be because a Nucleur War.
If the world did end, live everyday to the fullest. Don't take anyone for granted, and have fun.
Don't waste your energy!
Stay Positive... :)

I hope so. I really do. And I hope it's a zillion times more catastrophic than the Mayans thought. I will open a bottle of wine, sit on the deck with my redhead and the Thunks, and enjoy the last few moments in contentment.

only time will tell.
muahahahhaa
haha seriously though, these are only predictions so we can't tell yet. i wouldn't worry too much about it.
i dont want to get too much out of topic here.. but in my opinion, we all die when its the time for us to die...we just dont know when that is. for example, some people can get into a fatal accident yet be able to recover from it and live..however others could die from something so insignificant (like steve irwin)
you just never know. its not really in our mental capacity as humans to know the time of our death/end of the world.

The Mayans couldn't even predict their own demise, why do you think they can predict ours? If you keep worrying over hearsay, conspiracies, and doomsday reports, you won't even make it to 14.
