Well contrary to other answers, while Pavlov was the first to become famous for his gastric-reflex studies on canines, he was not the first. Pavlov's study was published in 1901.

Studies and the known behavior of being able to call dogs to food was known as early as the 1830's. There are articles and research about why this known information fell into obscurity until Pavlov rediscovered it but one earlier scientist that worked with canines is Alois Kreidl who's work was conducted in the mid to late 1800's.

Pavlov was not interested in canine behavior. He was actually testing his theory on learned behavior with humans but used dogs as the subjects.
