Hi I was wondering if anyone experienced could help me out. I just graduated with my MBA in business and I am very interested in become a property manager here in New York. I have very basic experience assisting my father on the side with some of his properties but I was wondering if anyone knows what steps I need to take in order to become a property manager and/or appeal to a potential employer for an assistant property management job. I currently have experience in unrelated fields like auto insurance claims in a call center, a couple of years of sales and retail experience.

Thanks.

It sounds like you have a lot of good experience and education....why dont you start calling some property management companies, find out who does the hiring, and tell them about yourself

My background is in RESIDENTIAL property management. Do you want to go in that direction or commercial? It sounds like you have a good foundation. You should check with some of the larger property management firms in your area (or other areas, if willing to relocate). Contact their HR dept and ask them what qualifications they are looking for in candidates and if they promote from within or look outside the organization. I have worked with several very good PMs that came from other industries.

Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) or National Apartment Association (NAA) can be of some help. They offer a wide array of education and training specific to the career path.

You may want to aquaint yourself with the differences between Owner managed and fee managed, publicly traded REITs, etc.

Here are some links

Here is a link to a company I am familiar with in Maryland that also has properties in NY http://www.homeproperties.com/about/our-company.asp

and in NJ and PA http://www.sawyerapts.com/career_center.html

I will add this to my watch list should you add addtional questions to this posting. Hope this helps.

No - you are considering the MRA Free Mortgage and Limousine Payment Society headquartered on Poverty (small the town simply north of the Tasmanian border - very rainy local weather) - no longer really the equal factor, even though there's a measure of overlap. Not definite that's the mum or dad institution, even though.
