go with small bodied fish such as neon tetras, zebra danios, guppies, and the such. Don't get too many remember the fish you buy at pet stores are just juviniles and will grow quite a bit.

I think some good fish are female or male platies aka moons. male or female guppies, female swordtails, african dwarf frogs, otocinclus, cory cats, male or female mollies, neon tetras, white clouds, dwarf gouramis, and zebra danios. The reason for either just ,male or female platies, guppies, mollies and swordtails because they are all livebearers, and breed easily. Male swordtails sometimes fight each other. Here are the sizes the fish grow to:
Platies-2''
Guppies-1.2''
Swordtails-about 3"
African Dwarf Frogs- about 2 1/2''
Otocinclus- 1.8''
Cory Cats-2-3''
Mollies-about 2 1/2''
Neon Tetras- 1.3''
Dwarf Gouramis- 2''
Zebra Danios- 2''

Just remeber, in a ten gallon, at the most you should have 8-12 fish in a ten gallon , these numbers are based off a tank w/ both a power filter and undergravel filter and swordtail sized fish.

i have a 10 gal too and zebra tetras (i think thats their name) have been living for over 2 years and mollys are another good choice also an algae eater who clean the inside of ur tank and also live long, one thing to keep in mind make sure the fish have plenty of room to roam and explore and dont have more than 5 to 6 fish
if interested in buying an algae eater, they hide alot make sure that have a place to hide
