What does the spectrum of a star tell you?

A spectrometer.

The spectrum graph shows the amount of light at each wavelength (color). There are black gaps showing certain frequencies of light have been absorbed and indicating the presence of certain elements.

It can show red/blue shift showing that the star is moving toward or away from us.
