The World Health Organization and the American Association of Pediatrics recommend that babies should be breastfed for *at least* 2 years.

some women never breastfeed. Some women only for a day or a week. Some for 3 months or 6 months. Some for 1 year or 2 years. Some as long as 4 or 5 or 7 years.

All is normal.

It's not sick, or gross, or harmful to your child to breastfeed that long (despite what some people will tell you)

The longer-the better. Ideally, your child should self-wean. Your child benefits from breastfeeding the ENTIRE time, no matter how long he breastfeeds.

My 18 month previous nurses about 2-4 circumstances an afternoon. Edit: As to the girl who breastfed to age 8. . . you won't be able to rigidity a baby to breastfeed, as many females whose babies weaned earlier mom changed into waiting will testify. and little ones free their first tooth round 8 . . . they are called milk tooth for a reason.

I nursed my first daughter for one year. I hope to at least nurse my second child that long maybe longer. They do say now that until 2 years is best for the baby. I have heard of some people nursing until 3 or 4.

Absolutely up to the woman and the baby. I breastfed seven children. One weaned herself at eight months; one fed until about 20 months. Most of mine stopped by about 14 months. I didn't forcibly wean any of them--- just increased other foods and liquids and they lost interest--especially as my milk supply dwindled with less suckling.
I've know many mothers who breast fed past two--- and a few who go past three. A very patient few go longer even than that!
If you can, definitely try to go at least 6 months--- gives your baby such a good start!
Plus, its SO much easier than getting up and fixing bottles day and night! You always have fresh sanitary milk at the perfect temperature. No allergies for baby. What could be better--- for you both?

However long you feel comfortable breastfeeding for, but I would stick with the recommendation of two years minimum. I breastfed my daughter for 2.5 years and plan to breastfeed my son until he is three. Toddler breastfeeding can be interesting, as they wiggle and try to stand on their heads. I breastfed my son for one year, well by his first birthday he was weaned of, i think that was a healthy way to do it, he got everything he needed and i felt comfortable with that time period, after they turn one they start walking etc it would get a little to weird for me.

well, my son is 7 months and is still breastfeeding. My cousin is 13 months old and still breastfeeding. Both babies also eat other food, but are also breastfeeding. It's really up to you.
