Yes, a foreseeable transformative event will happen on or near this year.
That event is that the trend of exponentially accelerating technological capability (the ability to inform matter...or "information") will hit the elbow of the hockey stick...that is, the line representing this trend, when charted on a graph, will change from near horizontal to near vertical.
Even now, brain function is being mapped; individual genome mapping and manipulation is progressing rapidly; nanotechnology is being applied through biotechnology to medicine. These things are happening fast, and accelerating. Our experience of the world is also changing quickly through the internet, and it's rapidly proliferating new applications.
When you imagine the moment when this acceleration itself accelerates by an order of magnitude, you get an event horizon.
In reality, it's just a continuation of what has been happening forever, throughout evolution, and history. The very idea of evolution, vis a vis "revolution," is that rather than a cyclical series of repeating events, you get a series in which each milestone marks a change, or transformation, that is more complex, more advanced, more adapted to circumstances, than previous versions. The fossil record verifies this.
So this sudden flash in which humanity as a whole will be able to process, contain and apply information will certainly constitute a drastic change. Whether is has anything to do with astronomical alignments, or if Mayans could foresee the event, seems to me mostly speculation.
However, there is a good change with our increased processing power, humanity as a whole will know a lot more about the implications and causes of this event when it happens.
For charts that map these exponential trends in detail, see Ray Kurzweil's "The Singularity Is Near."

ok. so. the mayan calendar does represent the end of time. they were able to predict lunar and solar eclispes 30 seconds off 1000s of years in the future. there calendar was extreamly accurate. The day end on dec 21 2012. i do belive ther will be a change. the change i belive is complete happiess for those who belive in God. Think about it the mayans when they died went to a place of complete solutude and peace. thats what the chance is suspected to be.. Ssecondly In the bible it says that a muslim ruler will lead the world to 3 years of chaos. obamas rein of the US is a term of 4 years long. Obama was muslim when he was a child but switched over to christianity. His father and mother were both muslim too. It also say that the world will end early in the 3rd day. if you consider a day to be 1000 years well we have already gone threw 2 and we are early into the third day. third of all the solar activite this year has been very very strange. the solar eclipses usually start and end with a sun spot that lasts for a month. this one was a reverse sun spot that lasted 3 mins. On on dec 21 2012 is the beginning of the winter soltace and at this time it is said that the sun the earth and the very center of the milky way will align and the mayans think it will be Catosrophic, So do scientists. Sense the center of the milky way is just a huge black hole. Scientists think this will cause the earth to tilt off its axis. Causing global chaos with tsunamis and all the volcanoes erupting. crazy fires breaking out tornatos just crazy crazy weather. Even as early as Einstien Had things about polar shifts in his studies. Research it man there is way more then even just this.......

Alot of people it seems are asking that same question. Whatever it may be... something is definitely stirring in the collective human subconscience. Perhaps it's just time for a change and perhaps even a drastic one. I noted one of your answers' said nothing changes drastically and to that I say bullcrap. One year for example... How about zero A.D. Anyways the Mayan Calendar, which is simply an astromonical measurment as most if not all calendars are, is coming to an end. The Earth will complete one wobble of it's natural precession spin on Dec 15th 2012. Coincidentally or not that the Earth fall in the same elliptical orbit with whatever is in the center of our galaxy in the same year. Along with other celestrial(e.g. incoming asteroids) and terrestrial coincidences(e.g. A. I. or cloning) converging upon these dates I would say as a race if what we fell is the stress of the impending then something is impending. As far as the drastically part of your question goes, I take that to mean something with to do with the actual state of each individual being, like a spike in the evolutionary rate of life on Earth, Humans being on the highest order of species(e.g. Cyborgs). Looking at what we believe in changing might be a good a good bet as well. Like Einstein changed the word, Newton and so forth. But I believe that what is gonna change is our naiviety and ignorance, some already known but soon everyone will know. There will be a great revelation of somekind, perhaps spritually, maybe even physically or spatially as the illuminati believe, but it will definitely be psychological and emotional. Maybe we will learn of our slavery or some dreadful deception or exploitation. Amassing these ideas with the science of astronomy is interesting because if space travel depends upon having ports say, then the number of available ports would be maxamized at the at galactic alignment in 2012. I ponder these conclusions with you, in awe.

LOL. Wikipedia says that the some people believe the Mayan Calendar indicates that there will be drastic changes (because it ends Dec 21 2012). Wikipedia itself doesn't say there will be drastic changes :-)

Yes, I believe that the End Times are upon us and there are many signs in the Bible that indictate that this is true. But then again, there have been countless times when people thought the world was coming to an end or that somebody was the antichrist etc.

I wouldn't worry (if you are talking about the shift in power and such). There are so many groups that have been predicting the apocalypse and world change since time began. 2000 was supposed to be the year of the world crashing and chaos, etc but what happened? People got drunk and partied like normal.
Don't worry. If we get there and we all die, I'll apolgize to you in the afterlife, hehehe...

According to the Bible Codes the Yellowstone Volcano will blow first in 2009 thru 2010.

nowhere does it say that the human race will change drastically, I suggest you reread your link.
THE VERY FIRST LINE BEGINS: "2012 is sometimes claimed to be a year of spiritual transformation ...." Nowhere does it say that the writers of wikipedia think that it will be.
Personally, I think it will be just like Y2K...a lot of commotion over absolutely nothing.
