In essence, all adopted values are traced to survival. Some are obviously to ensure physical survival but others are to ensure survival of society. These would tend to fall into the broad category of moral or ethical values.

When survival is not the primary concern.
At some point, survival seems to be ensured so we begin to adopt values which provide us with closure or pleasure or satisfaction or whatever else as human beings.
Yet I don't know if these values are seperate from survival... It seems that everything is traced back to that in some form or another.

When survival seems to be assured, when the future, and what is likely to happen in it is seemingly accounted for by insurance, savings, substitutes, abundance, adequate defense abilities, etc., then people/society start to look at more mundane values.
This is where eating contests, American Idol, and Paris Hilton come from.
