What are the current laws on whale hunting in Canada (both commercially and for subsistence e.g. for Natives), and is there any place where I can find more information? Thanks!

The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has jurisdiction over this, and is empowered by the Fisheries Act to enforce the Marine Mammal Regulations. There is a general prohibition on whaling, with several exceptions.

Also, Canada is a signatory to the 1946 International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, which allows nations to grant whale hunting licenses for scientific research.

Hope this helps.

The season lasts roughly from June to November. You need a permit ($35.00 Canadian).

There are certain restrictions. You are allowed only two whales per season and you may not hunt outside of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Good luck.

There are no laws, per se.... regulations under Department of Fisheries and Oceans mostly..... but rules concerning native populations can be different. Anyway, start with DFO under Government of Canada.....

It's knife season.

The seal hunting laws are still something along the lines of "Warranty void if seal is broken"
