the most simple things are generally the hardest to achieve...knowing yourself and accepting yourself is the hardest, being yourself comes easily after that...it only gets easier and simpler with time.. :-)

I would have to say that being our selves is the most simple thing there is.
Being who we were meant to be is probably the hardest thing there is. Almost every parent desires their offspring to be better than they are, not only financially, but socially. The thing that holds us back is our geographic and social settings which would include peer pressure.
There are always obstacles in the way to keep you from being the person you should be. The simple way is to just sit back and say, well, this is the way it is and I can live with that as there are too many problems to overcome.
The hardest way is to say, Well, I have all these problems to overcome or I will never be a better person, so I had better get started. You have to strive to be a better person. It is not always easy. Remember, No pain, No gain.

Yes being ourselves and not following the crowd, is technically going against our own evolution.
That is what set humans apart from other animals was that we copied everything around us, that lead us to learn.
Then again it is the most simple because all it really takes is a little self confidence.

It all depends upon how we conduct ourselves.
People who seek constant approval from others are mostly unable to be themselves in any situation because they are totally dependent on what other people think of them in regard to their thoughts and their actions.
On the other hand, if people learn not to care so much about what everyone else thinks of them; and if they, themselves, are able to think, speak and act in ways that reflect an enlightened inner spirit, then those people are most able to be themselves throughout their lives.
A word of caution here: some people think that being themselves involves expressions of darker natures; that is to say, criminal behavior of all sorts, behavior that would infringe upon the well-being of others. This type of behavior would only revert negatively back onto those people, as the law of Karma definitely comes into play. Being one's self does not mean that they should go out and do anything that they want to do, especially if it would be to the detriment of others.
The only way to be one's self is to be so in a manner that would positively inspire others to achieve more positive goals; to develop those attributes that would uplift one's own spirit as well as that of others; and above all, to radiate love and understanding to all beings. Believe it or not, that is the easiest thing of all to do.

I think it depnds on the social group you are a part of and how comfortable you are with yourself. This is a nurture versus nature type question.
Basically, if you're sure of the person you actually are and you know the people around you will love and support you for who you are, then being yourself is easy.
If for some reason or other, your true nature is repressed or you aren't sure yet of who you are, then being yourself can be very difficult.
If you observe students in middle school and the early years of high school, they are more likely to follow popular trends or try to fit a mold of how they believe they should be, where as older high school students and college students are more natural because they are more sure of who they are.
Unfortunately, I'm not yet sure of who I am, so I guess I will continue to flit about different stereotypes until I am fully satisfied with who I am. :)

For me it was the hardest to be my true total self, because people fought me; you see I was considered as strange, a freak you could say. Now things have been simplified; those people are no longer in my life.

Depends on how well we know ourselves and how relaxed we are about it. I wouldn't use superlatives either. The hardest and simplest things are almost impossible to define. Harder or simpler? is more realistic.

If you're in the middle of trying to figure out just who you really are, it's damn-near impossible.
But on a more deeper level, who the heck else could I be. If I try to pretend to be something I'm not, that's who I am; a pretender, a charlatan, a fake. In that light, it's pretty darn easy.
Peace

Depends on you, your confidence, the people around you, the situation you're in, and the type of society you live in. But in the end, you could just go against the grain a just be yourself for once. If you're going to end up screwing up either way, then it might as well be your true self.

it could be looked at both ways. Its the hardest when you do know who you are, but when you find out who you are, its the simplest thing ever.
