What is important to you? Any issues at all? I would suggest taking something from your personal life and dealing with that.
This could be gender issues, race issues (if you have them), location issues (where you live), ancestral issues (where did you/ your family come from?), ... the list can go on. Really brainstorm for something that is important in your life. Something that effects who you are.

My favorite art teacher told me "Every piece of artwork is political" If you took an asian print and put it in a catholic 1700 church, that would be VERY political. It is all about context. Whatever you make, no matter how non-socio commentative you think it is, can be made political just by putting in the right (or wrong) situation. Aliens will make front page news one day over your boring painting of flowers.

how about taking a crucifix and putting it in a vial of urine. oh wait, nevermind -- that's already been done.
