What does it take to earn a degree?

Is it all about taking classes and once your done with your major classes they hand you your degree? or do you have to write some long winded essay on why you deserve your degree once you have completed all of your major's classes.

You have to successfully complete all the courses required for the degree. That will be more than just your major. There will also be quite a few electives. When you have finished everything you may actually have to fill out an application for your degree, but for an associates or bachelors degree you don't have to write an essay.

You have certain pre requisite classes you take and then you start taking classes in your major. There are classes you have to complete and then its over. I think most degrees require around 120 credit hrs and in that number you have to include the required classes which are pretty much lined out for you.

If you complete all requirements for graduation, you just fill the paperwork needed to gratudate (typically a form called request for graduation). In some schools you might need to pay some fees realted to graduation.

For a BA or a BS most schools do not require any type of paper to graduate. There may be some exceptions but I have not heard of any.

Actually, there are plenty of undergraduate programs that will require your doing a senior thesis or research. It's supposed to be a culmination of your knowledge and be a professional finish to your time there.
