Johannes Gutenburg created the first printing press circa 1447 as well as movable type. Both were inovations in the printing field. Before that time, monks transcribed books by hand, which is why books were scarce and only an elite group could read.
Though I do agree, if this is homework, it is in your textbook, and as I pointed out, is easily found online.

The invention of movable type by Johannes Gutenberg. Before Gutenberg, people had to cut letters into wooden blocks one page at a time. Ten thousand page book? Ten thousand wood blocks. A hundred Bibles? Set each letter one at a time and run off 100 pages. Set each letter one at a time one more time (save all the letters from last time!) and run off 100 more pages. Print up 100 copies of the Bible, wait 500 years, and cash in on selling rare Bibles. Before wood blocks, a monk sat in his cell writing out the Bible until he was done.
