I want to put navigator, dvd, rims, maybe new paint job if it's not too expensive. Side effects, maybe some legal engine mods. I don't want to have a problem smogging it. Any ideas?

Honda Civics ... maybe a used Mustang. Toyota Celica also.

Well keeping in mind the old adage about getting what you pay for, good labor to work on your car is not going to be cheap.

As far as a car is concerned, I am better with GM's then with Fords and I lean toward the old muscle cars.

GM's standard 350 could be made into a hell of a power plant with the right cams and pistons. Its pretty easy to work on and it has been around as a standard core for almost 20 years meaning that it is fairly reliable.

If you wish to buypass the mechanic you can even purchase a souped up 'crate' engine from GM and add your own chrome. These cost from $2 to $5k and are NEW engines.

Given that, there are a wide range of cars you can drop these into. I prefer El Caminos which look unique, can go like a bat out of hades, and with the right combinations of transmissions and rear ends can grind most rice rockets to brittle pieces of tin and fiberglass. But you can also drop that combo into GTO's, Cameros, Chevelles or related cousins without any problem.

PLUS.. after you build it up.. it will KEEP that value as the price of these cars is only going UP (assuming you don't have a problem with telephone poles or trees).

In California any car earlier then 1976 is smog exempt regardless of the year of the innards.... I don't know what state you are in but there is prob. a comparison.

that's my two bits... stoke it up and roll it out.

Pickup any Foxbody Mustang. New and used parts are easy to come by and you'll have plenty of power with a 5.0 liter V8.

There are no limits when it comes to modifying these cars the aftermarket is full of parts.

Plus chicks dig 'em', I have owned three.

No such thing as inexpensive engine labor unless you have friends in the right places. Most of the time the cut-rate mechanics leave much to be desired in the quality department.

I'd say a Civic, since there are so many mods for them. But you could get a good Maxima for cheaper.
