"Hit the roof" means to become extremely angry - pissed off
My parents hit the roof when I told them that I am dropping out of college to work at McDonald's.

"Miss the boat" means to lose an opportunity or to arrive too late and miss out.
If you are late to the interview, you'll miss the boat for the job.


"Put your foot in your mouth" means to regret what you say or that you have to take back what you say.
After being asked to recommend someone for a job, a person might say, "I'll say great things about you, but don't do something that will make me put my foot in my mouth."
