Efficently- 20 degrees- that is when most units go to electric back up heat.

From experience, they seem to loose efficiency around 30 degree F. Much below that, they run, but blow out air colder then what you want in the house, suplemented by kicking on the heat strips.

I have been told it will extract atmospheric heat at 50 below zero..sure would hate to try it though..
