solids:

particles are quite rigid and compact, fixed volume and shape, although they still vibrate in their fixed position...attractions keeps them together

liquids:

particles still close enough to be attractive, however they are not as rigid and move around more freely, swapping positions....fixed volume(at a fixed temperature) but will take up the shape of it's container


gases:

particles are further apart, little attraction between them...move more rapidly in a random manner, collide and bounce off each other and the walls of the container...fits and fills the shape of the container regardless of volume...because the particles are spread further apart
