Things to consider when hiring an agent is of course their commission. You do not neccessarily want to go with the lowest (unless you feel that are the most qualified or connected) but you can use these numbers to try to negotiate a better rate amongst them.
You also want to determine how long you will be expected to use them as an agent before you can look elsewhere for an agent. Most people say to not go with any agent that requires you use their service for more than 90 days.
Also take into account their estimated selling price of your home. Some will high ball it in the hopes they will get your business knowing full well they can't sell your house for the price you outlined and will eventually need to lower the price. Low ballers may not get you all that is possible for your home.
Find out how often they intend to list your house in the local paper and conduct open houses. If they plan to create a virtual tour of your home and post that, along with still pics, on the web.

The best advertisement for a Realtor is word-of-mouth. So, if you have friends or family who have used a Realtor, I strongly suggest asking them for their opinions. You will want someone who listens to your needs, someone who follows up with you and someone you can trust.
Perhaps you can look at this as a job interview (afterall you're hiring them to work for you) and ask them the questions that are important to you. Also, ask for references if you weren't referred directly to them.
You mentioned that you don't want to hire an agent from a website, that's fine. However, checking the local websites may be able to give you an idea for the amount of inventory they currently have. If an agent has a lot of inventory, that might indicate that they're in the business full time. Just do lots of investigative work in advance. Buying/Selling a home is a big decision and you're going to be paying a lot for their services and you want them to earn it.
If you're from the Detroit area and looking for a good real estate website, I recommend www.MoveInMichigan.com.

I know you dont want to do it through website. But consider only paying half of the usual commission, that's a lot of savings. It is with the same exposure on the MLS plus Realtor.com and 4thishouse.com. Call them at 877-484-4746...or visit 4thishouse.com.

I would look for someone over 30 that owns a home and has a lot of experience in real estate.

Try asking friends and family members to refer someone that they know well.
