Reason 1: Germany sent a coded messege to Mexico asking them to stop the U.S. from entering the war in whatever way possible (Germany would then help Mexico retrieve lands the U.S took during the Mexican American War).

Reason 2: the U.S. was still mad at Germany for the sinking of the Lusitania a few years earlier.

Entry of the United States
Main article: American Expeditionary Force

President Wilson before Congress, announcing the break in official relations with Germany on February 3, 1917America's policy of isolation, and thus wanting stay out of any European affairs, while also trying to broker a peace resulted in tensions with both Berlin and London. When a German U-boat sank the British liner Lusitania in 1915, a large passenger liner with 128 Americans aboard, the United States President, Wilson, vowed "America was too proud to fight", and demanded an end to attacks on passenger ships. Germany complied. Wilson tried to mediate a compromise settlement; yet no compromise was discovered. Wilson also repeatedly warned that America would not tolerate unrestricted submarine warfare because it violated America's rights. Wilson was under great pressure from former president Teddy Roosevelt, who denounced German "piracy" and Wilson's cowardice. In January 1917 the Germans announced they would resume unrestricted submarine warfare. Berlin's proposal to Mexico to join the war as Germany's ally against the U.S. was exposed in February, angering American opinion. (see Zimmermann Telegram). After German submarines attacked several American merchant ships, sinking three, Wilson requested that Congress declare war on Germany, which it did on April 6, 1917.[11] The U.S. House of Representatives approved the war resolution 373-50, the U.S. Senate 82-6, with opposition coming especially from German American districts such as Wisconsin. The U.S. declared war on Austria-Hungary in December 1917. The United States was never formally a member of the Allies but an "Associated Power".

While President Wilson and Congress had declared war on Germany, most of the nation did not share the political enthusiasm for a nation that was at war. The common attitude among ordinary Americans was that Europe has a long history of brutal and bloody wars, and many Americans did not want their sons entangled into this conflict. The war was distant, and just didn't capture the American interest, and besides the American economy was in a boom, and jobs were plentiful. But on February 5th, 1918, nearly eight months after America officially entered the war, Germany struck America with a mighty blow when the British transport "Tuscania" carrying 2,179 American soldiers to Europe, was sunk by a torpedo from "UB-77." The news took America by shock, for the first time since the American Civil war, America was feeling the pain of mass casualties on a grand scale. This was the first time a transport carrying American troops to Europe was sunk by a submarine. American News and Propaganda that resulted, fueled a record number of enlistments at Army recruiting stations across the country. And America had awoke with a mighty resolve and a thirst for revenge, and the nation rallied to war.
