A faction is a special interest group. For example, modern day factions include the NRA, PETA, McDonalds Corporation, Exxon Oil Corporation, or religious groups like the Catholic church. James Madison, in the Federalist 10, (see Federalist Papers), argues that the "mischief of factions" is responsible for the destruction of a democracy. (Madison favored a republic, the Framers' name for what we now call representative democracy).
