Well, put it this way...
Would you want a short, over-weight guy trying to carry you out of your house while it's burning down?
They have to maintain good physical condition for the work demands they go through. Simple enough.

IDK about the 6 foot tall thing, but all firefighters have to be really strong to lug all that equipment around. Think about it a minute, and you will see what I mean. Put on regular clothes, then heavy overalls, boots, an insulated coat, a helmet, and a full oxygen tank. Now that you're dressed, grab either (A) a high-pressure fire hose, that can whip regular people around like a dragon, or (B) a heavy ax, and RUN WITH IT. Now, chop down a burning door. Don't lose any speed!
I'm out of breath already. I think they all probably have to work out like Arnold Swartzenegger to do stuff like that all the time.

Firefighters go through intense training to be in shape to be a firefighter. Only the strongest out of these actually become firefigthers.

Firefighters ought to safeguard their well-being and well-being to accomplish the initiatives in contact in firefighting, Haz-Mat,Rescue and EMS. donning turnout kit and an air p.c.. on a 95 degree day can take its toll, yet then rescue somebody trapped in a fireplace, carry out CPR, and combat the fireplace demands greater effective than a settee potato build.

firefighters need to be in good shape to do their jobs. the gear and equipment is heavy and awkward. however, strength is not the only ingredient; they need to be in good cardiovascular shape to work in demanding situations and long hours. their physical condition is also important so that the firefighters themselves do not become victims at fire scenes causing additional work for rescures.

I am not quite that tall but has worked as firefighter paramedic, they require you to be physically fit for the exam and pay you to stay physically fit and comptent....
*yes I am in good shape, but it is a dedication to profession than to the job...or looks.... yes, I am gay, my boyfriend is a handsome man but his job does not require him to have the muscle stanima as mine, so it is mainly a job requirement, the good looks is usually due to the slim apperance and muscle mass nd not the facial futrues, upon closer inspection, it is just average)

I doubt a wimp could carry about 60 pounds of gear while carrying a 100+ pound person to safety.

You need to be strong to be a firefighter. You have to carry people, hoses, and all that gear. I'm guessing that's why.

You're lucky, most firefighters in my area are fat toothless smelly hillbillies. Not that I don't appreciate the work they do, but that's what they are.
