Xnview, free at http://www.xnview.com
lets you resize pics (reduce/enlarge); rotate them; crop; red-eye correction (works most times); save in many formats such as .jpg .gif .bmp .png .tif, etc.; adjust brightness and contrast; perform some special effects; produce slideshow of pics; etc. etc.
Open xnview (after installing) - you can reduce in a couple of ways:
Click File, open, and browse to the location (not on the desktop) of your pic. Double click the pic. Now:
[1] crop the pic (select just a portion of the pic to save, such as saving the portion that has a person who is the focus of the pic and deleting the background)
Click your cursor anywhere on the pic. Hold down the left mouse button while dragging the mouse to make a box around the portion of the pic you want to keep. Click Edit, click Crop.
or
[2] reducing the size while keeping the whole picture.
Click Image, click Resize - it gives you several types of resizing options. The easiest for me...is selecting 75% size, 50% size, 200% size, etc.
When you have the pic the way /size you desire,
Click File, Save As, select where you want to save the picture, give it a name, and choose the format in which you want to save it (such as .jpg).
I tend to select a name close to, but not the same as, the original pic. For example, if my pic is named Red Ball - I name the revised pic Red Ball 2.
So you still have the original for any purpose you might wish.
